A Special Delivery to Our Friends at Watkins Middle School
On Thursday, September 25, 2008 a group of Mustangers made a special delivery to our friends at Watkins Middle School, 180 Intermediate dictionaries, and some food for the teachers!
Unfortunately, the children at Watkins were using dictionaries from 1974! As we all know, there are new words added to the dictionary all of the time, so you can imagine how much they were missing out on. For example, the word mouse potato was added to the dictionary in 1993 which is slang for a person who spends a great deal of time using a computer. Or how about supersize, which was added in 1994, meaning to increase considerably the size, amount, or extent of. And what about, bling-bling and bling added in 1999, meaning flashing jewelry worn esp. as an indication of wealth; broadly: expensive and ostentatious possessions. Those are just a few examples of words that have been added over the last few years to the dictionary. The list goes on and on and will continue to grow over time.
These children were in desperate need of new dictionaries and Mustang recognized that fact. The dictionaries will help the students prepare for the upcoming standardized exams, as well as assist the faculty in teaching the students new words. The teachers at Watkins were very appreciative, as you can see from the images below!
