Watkins Middle School understands the value in teambuilding and wanted a special spirit and energy brought to the Teacher-Student Mentor program this year. Ginger Gamble, Academic Achievement Specialist, contacted Mustang to help with the first meeting of teachers and students in the program… and what a meeting it was!
Mentors and students gathered in the cafeteria to get to know each other, and enjoy ice cream treats. After ice-cream and good conversations they made their way to the “Landmine Course” prepared for them by Mustanger volunteers. The teachers were blindfolded and instructed by their student to walk through the course safely, without stepping on any of the objects strung about the floor; this initiated trust between the new pairs which was amazing to watch. The willingness to be vulnerable with your partner and establishing a goal are the first components in becoming a great team!
It was a memorable success for the teachers, students, and the Mustangers who helped! One of the students thanked us for helping and said “This is the most fun I’ve ever had with my teacher!
