Oasis for Soldiers in Afghanistan

United States soldiers in Afghanistan work almost twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. What if there was a place for them to go for personal relaxation and reflection? Chaplain JD Sims of the 57th Signal Expeditionary Battalion from Fort Hood, TX is making that place a reality. The Oasis, a coffeehouse lounge and a small-group recreational and instruction area, is the dream of Chaplain Sims, also known as Chaplain Java to his troops. The Oasis will be a smoke-free, alcohol-free environment that will serve as an internet café with TV’s, games, and literature, and will also support special events, Chaplain counseling, and support groups.

Houston Mustangers have been supporting this battalion through Operation Paperback and brought this new initiative to Mustang’s attention. The Heart of Mustang donated the espresso machine, flavored coffee, coffee mugs, books, and CD’s to help start the Oasis. Construction of the new building is scheduled to be completed in August with the Oasis up and running in September. “We have all the supplies necessary to make the Oasis happen thanks to the generosity of Mustang,” said Chaplain Sims.
